PA Fair Share has Internships -- Fair Share Alliance works to provide every American with a fair shot at a good job, a secure future, and a strong voice in our democracy. This spring, we are working on a campaign to extend incentives for American wind energy production.

We are currently seeking spring interns interested in working for clean energy jobs in Pennsylvania. This position typically runs at least 10 weeks, for 10-20 hours per week. Current student standing is not necessary. Please note that all positions are subject to modification and can be tailored to each intern's specific interests.

In this workshop attendees will learn how to create and deploy tests in Blackboard. The various question types which be shown. Methods to facilitate academic integrity will be discussed, one such method is a Question Set which consists of multiple questions which may be drawn upon and presented to students in a randomized manner. Another integrity related feature is the Respondus Lockdown Browser. This customized browser restricts access to other applications on the test takers’ PC during the test. We will also go over the basic test settings such as how to make a test available, setting a timer and optional settings such as the automatic submission feature. Organization is another component which we will explore. Metadata provides an option to categorize questions, which allows for searching and the reuse of questions in future tests. The test grading process occurs through the Grade Center, instructors will be taught how to access and grade students’ test. Statistical analysis will also be discussed. We will cover the Pools tool, which allows instructors to organize questions for use in tests or to export them to another course. Surveys allow students to answer questions and provide feedback anonymously.

Born in a tribal ethnic minority family in Cambodia, Somaly Mam struggled through poverty and limited opportunities during her childhood. Because of this, Mam was sold into a life of sexual slavery many times by a man who posed as her grandfather.

At a very young age, she was forced to work in a brothel with many other young girls and they were all treated horrifically through torture, manipulation, and scare tactics.

From this moment on, she made it her mission to escape and later find a way to stop this vicious cycle. In 1996, Somaly established a Cambodian non-governmental organization called AFESIP which translates into “Acting for Women in Distressing Situations.” Under Somaly's leadership, AFESIP has rescued thousands of women from sexual slavery and employs a holistic approach that ensures victims not only escape their plight, but have the emotional and economic strength to face the future with hope. With the launch of the Somaly Mam Foundation in the United States in 2007, Somaly has established a funding vehicle to support anti-trafficking organizations and to provide victims and survivors with a platform from which their voices can be heard around the world.

Her incessant diligence and perseverance to combat sex slavery and human trafficking has brought Mam enormous international recognitions including being honored as a “CNN Hero,” Glamour’s “Woman of the Year,” and one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People.” Mam has been featured on various TV specials on ABC, CBS, NBC and MSNBC.

In this workshop, attendees will learn about the NBC Learn archives which are integrated within Blackboard Learn. Attendees will be shown how to access the archives as well as search, preview and embed the videos into their course. Other features include the Cue Card and downloading the videos for off-line viewing. The content categories will be explored which are organized by discipline or searchable through key words. The system contains historic and current events. You may organize the videos in your course, additionally, students may access and view videos through the Blackboard portal. The trainer will spend some time going over the features of the Cue Card. The key features in the Cue Card include saving to a playlist, embedding into your Blackboard course, and printing a transcript of the event. The Citation feature within Cue Cards allows students to copy the citation information from a choice of three different citation format standards. A hands-on exercise will allow workshop participants to practice embedding NBC Learn videos into their Blackboard course. In addition to adding the videos to content pages, videos can be included within interactive tools such as Discussion Board Forums. Instructors may utilize Blackboard’s tracking feature to monitor the students’ progress.

Please join us in Falvey Memorial Library on Monday, Feb. 6, at 1:00 p.m. for a lecture by Bernard J. Gallagher, PhD, faculty member of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. The lecture will be held in room 204, located on the second floor of Falvey.

In his talk, titled “Schizophrenia: Groups at Risk and Recently Discovered Causes,” Dr. Gallagher will be presenting research from his new book, The Sociology of Mental Illness.He heads a Villanova research team investigating the causes of schizophrenia. Some of his team's recent findings are intriguing. Specifically, he will present evidence that some cases of schizophrenia may stem from a prenatal illness and that influenza vaccination of pregnant women may be an important method of preventing some cases of this devastating mental illness.

Drawing on long-term participant observations as well as in-depth research, Brouwer tells the story of Venezuela’s Integral Community Medicine program, in which doctor-teachers move into the countryside and poor urban areas to recruit and train doctors from among peasants and workers. This program is not without its challenges. Despite the obstacles it describes, Revolutionary Doctors demonstrates how a society committed to the well-being of its poorest people can actually put that commitment into practice, by delivering essential health care through the direct empowerment of the people it aims to serve.

In 1923 Oklahoma a petty criminal tried for a bigger prize, robbing a payroll train, and was killed by a sheriff’s posse. His short career in crime was followed by a much longer one in show business, ending only when his by then unidentified body fell apart on a television stage. Examination of his remains led to identification as one Elmer McCurdy and a final resting place in Boot Hill. In November of 1963 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Over 40 years later Dr. Michael Zimmerman, Adjunct Professor of Biology, was asked by the FBI to examine some of the evidence. Why was there this long delay and what was found? Dr. Zimmerman has an M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine and a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. He teaches courses on paleopathology, evolution, and big history at Villanova University and at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nancy Sherman is a distinguished University Professor at Georgetown, appointed in the Philosophy Department and affiliated with the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. She has also taught at the Georgetown University Law Center, where she is a co-founder of the Philosophy and Law joint seminar. Her publications include The Untold War: Inside the Hearts, Minds, and Souls of our Soldiers (W.W. Norton, 2010) and Stoic Warriors: The Ancient Philosophy behind the Military Mind (Oxford, 2005).

The Intersection of Virtue and Ethics is the first of a series of annual lectures dedicated to reflection on the many facets of the Catholic intellectual tradition. In this workshop, attendees will learn about the different views in the Blackboard Grade Center Control Panel Menu, which include: Needs Grading, Full Grade Center, Assignments and Tests. We will show you how to download the grade center, which affords the convenience of working offline using a familiar program like Excel, and then upload the grades back into the learning management system. There will also be a lesson on column creation and organization. The column types will be explored. Organizational features such as column reordering, row visibility, color-coding and grading periods will be demonstrated. We will also explore Smart Views which can be generated to display specific, targeted grade data. Auditing features such as the Grade History tool allow instructors to tracks all the changes to grades in the Grade Center, downloadable reports can be generated.
Evaluation is a separate but related component to the Grade Center; attendees will learn how to generate course reports. The Early Warning System provides a process for automated notifications based on criteria defined by the instructor. You will be taught how to create these rules and how to check the rules by reviewing their status. The Performance Dashboard will be explained.

In this workshop, attendees will learn about the Communication Tools within Blackboard Learn, which are part of the Interactive Tools. The Tools include Blogs, Discussion Boards, Journals and Wikis. Examples of Blogs will be shown. Journals will be defined; some examples will be discussed relative to particular disciplines. The trainer will demonstrate how to add these tools to a course; participants will have an opportunity to perform a hands-on exercise by adding one or more of tools to their course. The familiar Discussion Board will be discussed; attendees will learn how to create a Forum. Forum settings will be explored; the attendees will be made aware of the management and grading options. The course instructor has a variety of tools at their disposal to stimulate on-line conversations. We will show you how to utilize Blackboard’s Mashup Tools in conjunction with the Communication Tool. We will demonstrate how to add a video from YouTube, NBC Learn, a photo from Flickr or a presentation from Slideshare. The similarities between the settings for the Communication tools will be discussed. Applications for Wikis which are new to the learning management system will be shared. The use of Wikis for group projects and research will be elaborated upon.

Dr. Gavin Wilk will discuss Joseph McGarrity's leadership of the US-based republican organization, Clan na Gael, the local and national organizational structure of the Clan in Philadelphia and the US.

Dr. Wilk, Ph.D. University of Limerick, B.A. Villanova, will explore Joseph McGarrity’s strong ties with Irish Republican Army veterans who had emigrated to the US after the Irish Civil War, and include stories of leading Irish republicans in Philadelphia and New York. McGarrity's involvement with the Irish Hospitals Sweepstake will be detailed as well as his major role in an IRA bombing campaign in England during 1939. He will also describe the resources used for his research, particularly discuss the McGarrity collection at Villanova's Falvey Library.

The short film analyzes the energy efficiency of a 100-year-old building and presents the green makeover plans to the owner. The green experts involved will discuss applying the lessons shown to other businesses.

This is a great event to learn more about energy efficiency and meet many green experts, while networking. You do not need to be a Chamber member to attend.

In this workshop, attendees will learn about Villanova University’s new (as of summer ’11) learning management system, Blackboard Learn 9.1. The topics to be covered include an exploration of the Blackboard Learn 9.1 interface starting with the My Institution tab. You will learn how to view and organize your Course List. Next we will enter a course for an overview of the course components. We will demonstrate the navigation methods. You will learn how to rearrange the course menu by using the drag & drop feature. The basic steps for adding content such as adding a course syllabus and other course files will be demonstrated. The new content types in Blackboard Learn will be discussed such as the Mashup features which allow instructors to easily link multimedia components into your course from popular sites such as YouTube, Flicker, and SlideShare. The NBC Learn archives will also be introduced. You will be shown how to personalize your course through the customization features. We will look at the Course Tools and show you how to hide tools. The Workshop will include a glimpse into other features including Assessments and Interactive tools. The tour will conclude with a quick overview of the Blackboard Grade Center followed by a hands-on practice session.

The Elephant is set post-Hiroshima in a hospital where a victim of the attack contemplates life and the choices he makes. Minoru Betsuyaku was born in Japanese-occupied Manchuria. He’s written over 120 plays, and his works are produced extensively throughout Japan. The Elephant was written in 1961, and it’s been his most enduringly popular play.

Truly customer-centric organizations have data systems and generate customer insights which help drive positive downstream customer behavior (narrowed consideration sets, higher wallet share, strong retention likelihood) and help attract new customers. A key challenge in becoming customer-centric is that traditional customer measurement frameworks and metrics do not reflect the current customer decision-making environment. This presentation will make the case for customer advocacy as a key performance metric (KPI), segmentation device, and customer management paradigm.

Michael Lowenstein, PhD, CMC, is an Executive Vice President at Market Probe, a leading worldwide consulting and marketing research organization (www.marketprobe.com). Author of five customer-centric strategy books and over 150 white papers and articles, his most recent book, The Customer Advocate and The Customer Saboteur, was published in 2011. He has presented and conducted workshops at industry and professional conferences across the United States and in over 30 foreign countries. Additionally, Dr. Lowenstein has lectured in the MBA and EMBA programs of University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, New York University and Columbia University. He is broadly experienced in consulting and conducting research in many b2b and b2c product and service industries. His particular areas of interest are impact of word-of-mouth communication and brand favorability on downstream customer behavior, employee commitment and ambassadorship, and how organizations build trust and authenticity through customer centricity, and use customer data, in reaching their strategic business goals.

There’s an app for that. Today’s learners are on the go, mobile devices have become an integral component for social and business interactions. In this workshop attendees will learn about the Blackboard Mobile Learn application which facilitates interactive teaching and learning via mobile devices. The app allows students and educators to access their courses and associated content as well as activities. The app may be downloaded for free from Apple’s App Store. It is only available for Apple IOS devices which include the iPad, iPhone and the iPod Touch. We will explore the Mobile Learn interface through a live demonstration via an iPad. Attendees will be shown the Blackboard features which are accessible through the BB Mobile app. The features that we will focus on include communication and interactive tools as well as grading. Best practice tips will be shared with the audience to guide instructors to design their course in a manner which presents content and activities in format which is optimal for consumption by mobile audiences. You will learn about the recommended file types and media formats such as MP4s as well as formats to avoid. The application provides another medium to reach your students in an engaging manner. In this workshop, attendees will learn about the different views in the Blackboard Grade Center Control Panel Menu, which include: Needs Grading, Full Grade Center, Assignments and Tests. We will show you how to download the grade center, which affords the convenience of working offline using a familiar program like Excel, and then upload the grades back into the learning management system. There will also be a lesson on column creation and organization. The column types will be explored. Organizational features such as column reordering, row visibility, color-coding and grading periods will be demonstrated. We will also explore Smart Views which can be generated to display specific, targeted grade data. Auditing features such as the Grade History tool allow instructors to tracks all the changes to grades in the Grade Center, downloadable reports can be generated.
Evaluation is a separate but related component to the Grade Center; attendees will learn how to generate course reports. The Early Warning System provides a process for automated notifications based on criteria defined by the instructor. You will be taught how to create these rules and how to check the rules by reviewing their status. The Performance Dashboard will be explained.

In this workshop attendees will learn how to create and deploy tests in Blackboard. The various question types which be shown. Methods to facilitate academic integrity will be discussed, one such method is a Question Set which consists of multiple questions which may be drawn upon and presented to students in a randomized manner. Another integrity related feature is the Respondus Lockdown Browser. This customized browser restricts access to other applications on the test takers’ PC during the test. We will also go over the basic test settings such as how to make a test available, setting a timer and optional settings such as the automatic submission feature. Organization is another component which we will explore. Metadata provides an option to categorize questions, which allows for searching and the reuse of questions in future tests. The test grading process occurs through the Grade Center, instructors will be taught how to access and grade students’ test. Statistical analysis will also be discussed. We will cover the Pools tool, which allows instructors to organize questions for use in tests or to export them to another course. Surveys allow students to answer questions and provide feedback anonymously.
