Churches, Cemeteries, and Shrines:
Christian Ritual Spaces in Augustine's Africa
The architectural settings for Christian liturgical practices can tell us much about how they were enacted and what they signified to those who participated in them. Coordinating studies of extant material evidence with relevant texts allows historians of religion not only to understand more about the lived religion of the past but also to imaginatively recreate some of these rites in their actual settings. The rich archaeological sites from Roman Africa (parts of modern Tunisia and Algeria) include exemplary examples of Christian basilicas, baptisteries, pilgrimage shrines, and cemetery structures that enhance our knowledge of Christianity and enrich our analysis of its context.
