The Belle Creole's Burden: Anais Segalas and France's "Civilizing Mission"
Start Date: 9/29/2008Start Time: 4:30 PM
End Date: 9/29/2008End Time: 5:30 PM
Event Description
The Department of Modern Languages and Literature is pleased to present

Dr. Adrianna M. Paliyenko (Professor of French and Chair of the Department of French and Italian, Colby College) The Belle Créole’s Burden: Anaïs Ségalas and France’s "Civilizing Mission”

Dr. Paliyenko’s work offers a critical engagement with imperialism in Ségalas’s colonial-themed poetry and prose. Apparently caught between her Creole heritage and sense of national French identity, Ségalas paradoxically reproduces her century’s split response to the "Negro question" and ultimate regression to scientific racism. In English.
